Ginger is a rhizome plant native to Southeast Asia and has been used for thousands of years in various cultures for its medicinal and culinary properties.

Originally from the tropical region of Southeast Asia, Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been cultivated since 3000 BC.

It was used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine to treat various ailments, such as stomach aches, arthritis, and fever.

As trade and exploration expanded during the medieval period, ginger became a valuable and sought-after ingredient, being used as an expensive spice.

The trade in ginger was promoted by Arab conquerors, who introduced the plant to other regions of the world, including Africa and Europe. The Venetian traveler and explorer Marco Polo also mentioned ginger in his writings in the 13th century.

With the colonial expansion of Europeans, ginger was brought to North and Central America, where it quickly became a popular ingredient in colonial cuisine and continued to be used in the traditional medicine of the indigenous populations of Central America.

In many cultures, ginger was considered a natural aphrodisiac and was used to stimulate sexual desire, and in Asian cultures, ginger was often offered as a symbol of well-being and good luck.

Today, ginger continues to be used around the world, being used in the preparation of foods and beverages, such as ginger tea, sauces, desserts and oriental dishes.

It is also valued for its therapeutic properties, including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiemetic and digestive effects.

The most potent and concentrated part of the ginger plant is the rhizome, or root. The rhizome is the underground part of the plant, which contains the bioactive compounds and volatile oils that give ginger its flavor and therapeutic properties.

Ginger rhizome is harvested and used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an essential oil to benefit from its properties.
