Cinnamon, one of the oldest and most appreciated spices, enjoys historical mentions dating back over 4000 years. Cinnamon was prized in many ancient cultures, both for its rich flavor and medicinal properties.

In ancient times, cinnamon was used by the Egyptians in the mummification process, as a spice in culinary preparations, and as a medicine. In traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, cinnamon was also used to treat a variety of ailments.

Due to its very high price, cinnamon was so prized that it became one of the first luxury goods in international trade.
Cinnamon originated in Sri Lanka, from where it was transported along the Spice Route to Europe, where it became a status symbol in the Middle Ages.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese established a monopoly on the cinnamon trade in Sri Lanka, which they maintained for almost a century. The Dutch eventually took control in the 17th century, and later, in the 19th century, the British dominated the spice trade.

Today, cinnamon remains a popular spice around the world, used in a variety of foods, beverages, personal care products, and essential oils.

To obtain pure cinnamon essential oil, the leaves of the tree are hand-harvested and prepared for distillation by crushing them to increase the surface area available for distillation.

The cut leaves are then placed in a still, where they are exposed to hot water steam. The heat and steam release the essential oils from the leaves, which are rich in bioactive compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, which are beneficial to the human body.

Studies suggest that cinnamon essential oil may contribute to heart health by reducing levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, while maintaining levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and may help regulate blood sugar levels, which may be particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes.

This appears to be due to its ability to improve insulin sensitivity.
