Sleep well!
What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone produced in the body by the pineal gland, located in the brain. It plays an important role in setting the biological clock (circadian rhythm). The main factor that stimulates the production of Melatonin is darkness, while light has the opposite effect.
Since 1917, there has been scientific data about melatonin, but it was not until 1995, at MIT, U.S.A., that the first patent appeared that referred to the use of the hormone melatonin for sleep.
The Role of Melatonin in the Body
Research suggests that melatonin has beneficial effects on the entire body, beyond sleep: it supports the proper functioning of the endocrine system, the immune system and contributes to a good mental state.
Lack of melatonin
With age, or due to medication or other functional causes, Melatonin secretion cycles are disrupted, with harmful effects on health.
The Body’s Reactions to Melatonin Imbalance:
• Age-related macular degeneration.
• High blood pressure.
• Alzheimer’s disease.
• Irritable bowel syndrome.
• Anxiety.
• Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism.
• Alopecia.
• Increased appetite and weight gain.
