Native to Australia, the eucalyptus tree, also called the “gum tree”, belongs to a family of over 400 different species of trees and grows up to 50 meters tall.

It was used in the past by native aborigines for its healing properties, as an antiseptic to kill germs, heal wounds and fungal infections, reduce symptoms of coughs, colds and fever, but also as an ingredient in creams and ointments to relieve muscle and joint pain.

Its amazing benefits have led to Eucalyptus being used in other traditional systems of medicine, such as Chinese, Indian (Ayurvedic), Greek and European.

Eucalyptus was first introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant in the 18th century. It spread rapidly to Portugal, where the species multiplied rapidly and was later used in reforestation and to prevent soil erosion.

The first official medical record of the use of eucalyptus was by Baron Ferdinand von Muller (German-Australian physician, geographer, botanist, 1825-1896), who intended to use eucalyptus oil as an antiseptic.

Recognizing the value of eucalyptus, he encouraged Joseph Bosisto in 1853 to distill eucalyptus oil on a commercial scale and exported the tree’s seeds to India, Algeria and California, arguing that it would combat malaria, one of humanity’s oldest and deadliest infectious diseases.

Consequently, in 1955, the French government sent eucalyptus seeds to Algeria to transform the malaria-ridden swamplands into a safe zone.

In Europe, it is planted in the northern Iberian Peninsula, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, and is valued for its high-quality wood.

Today, Eucalyptus globulus is the main source of eucalyptus oil used globally. The oil extraction process involves drying, crushing and steam distilling the leaves to extract the essential oil with a strong, sweet, woody scent. Once the oil is extracted, it is diluted so that it is safe to use.

It contains 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol. Eucalyptol makes up about 80% of eucalyptus oil, which is responsible for fighting germs, bacteria, viral infections, reducing inflammation, and relieving pain.

Eucalyptus oil has purifying properties that are beneficial for the skin or for cleaning surfaces and the air. Studies have shown that eucalyptus oil is effective in reducing tension.

Laboratory studies have shown that eucalyptus oil contains substances that kill germs, bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Eucalyptus acts as an expectorant and helps to calm coughs.

ADMINISTRATION:

» For internal use, diluted with honey or edible oil:

4-5 drops 2 times a day. The dose is mixed in a teaspoon of honey (diabetics: a quarter teaspoon of edible oil).
Use for 7-14 days. Can be repeated after a 2-week break.

» For internal use, in empty vegetable capsules: 

Administration in capsules allows for better assimilation of the oils, as they reach directly into the stomach where they act at the gastric level.Open an empty vegetable capsule, insert the essential oil with the syringe/dropper together with the edible oil according to the instructions on the leaflet, and close the capsule. It is recommended to swallow the capsules immediately.

» For external, topical, diluted use:
To avoid discomfort, drying and irritation of the skin, or even the rapid evaporation of essential oils, it is recommended to apply them together with almond or argan oil. In massage therapies, it is recommended to use it diluted in oils with a more solid consistency.
Do not apply to open wounds, irritated skin or sunburn. Test a small amount on a skin area beforehand.

» Aromatherapy, inhalations:
It is used in ultrasonic diffusers and aromatherapy lamps, both for the benefits brought to the body (relaxing, anti-allergic, decongestant), and to clean and disinfect the room from bacteria, fungi and mold spores. Cold inhalations are recommended for relaxation, or hot (1-3 drops), in respiratory diseases: rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, etc.

Packaged in a glass container, with a dropper to:

• obtain a controlled dosage
• not to volatilize the oil upon contact with air
• not to be compromised by external organic matter
