Surprisingly, the exact origin of the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) has not been precisely established. Most botanists believe it originated in southwest China, being a natural hybrid of Citrus maxima (Pomelo) and Citrus reticulata (Mandarin).
In Chinese literature the orange is mentioned as early as 2400 BC and by around 800 AD Arab traders had already introduced it to East Africa and the Middle East via trade routes. Today, the fruit is widely cultivated in all areas with a favorable climate: USA, Brazil, China, Jamaica, Portugal, etc.
Sweet orange essential oil has a rich, fresh aroma that freshens the air when diffused. Sweet Orange essential oil comes from the peel of the fruit and is carefully extracted by cold pressing, the traditional method of isolating the beneficial compounds found in abundance in the peel of the fruit.
There have been numerous uses for Sweet Orange essential oil since ancient times. It has been used as an antiviral, antimicrobial and skin protection agent. In recent years specialists have conducted numerous studies based on essential oil compounds to find new solutions for treating various staphylococcal, streptococcal and fungal infections.
In vitro studies have demonstrated the benefits of Sweet Orange essential oil on inhibiting the growth of fungi.
Sweet Orange essential oil is also beneficial in fighting against stress, being an excellent natural tonic. The therapists use Sweet Orange essential oil in counselling anxious patients, with impressive results.
ADMINISTRATION:
» For internal use, diluted with honey or edible oil:
Adults: 2-3 drops twice a day. The dose is mixed in a teaspoon of honey (diabetics: a quarter teaspoon of edible oil). Use for 7-14 days.
It may be repeated after a 2-week break.
» For internal use in empty vegetable capsules:
Administration in capsules allows a better assimilation of the oils, as they go directly into the stomach where they act at the gastric level. Open an empty vegetable capsule, introduce the essential oil with the syringe/dipper together with the edible oil as indicated on the leaflet, and close the capsule. It is recommended to swallow the capsules immediately.
» For external topical use, diluted:
In order to avoid any discomfort, dryness and irritation of the skin, or even the rapid evaporation of the essential oils, it is recommended to apply them together with an almond or argan oil. In massage therapies, it is recommended to use diluted in oils with a firmer consistency. Do not apply on open wounds, irritated skin or sunburn. Test in advance
a small amount on an area of skin.
» Aromatherapy, inhalations:
It is used in ultrasound diffusers and aromatherapy lamps. Cold inhalations are recommended for relaxation, or hot inhalations (1-3 drops).
