What is chronic constipation?
Chronic constipation is a condition characterized by difficult defecation, which persists for at least three months. People with chronic constipation often experience: hard, dry stools, a feeling of bloating, discomfort or pain during bowel movements.
There are several possible causes of chronic constipation, including:
- a diet low in fiber and water
- a sedentary lifestyle
- gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, or diverticulosis
- certain medications, such as opioids, antidepressants, or antispasmodics
- certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism or diabetes
- aging
Who is prone to chronic constipation?
Chronic constipation can affect anyone, but certain groups of people are more likely to develop it. Risk factors include:
- Older age: Older people are more susceptible to chronic constipation due to reduced intestinal muscle activity and hormonal changes, as well as reduced digestive enzymes.
- Women: are more prone to chronic constipation than men due to hormonal differences and the effects of pregnancy on the digestive tract.
- Sedentary people: People who have a reduced physical activity program are more prone to chronic constipation.
- People with a low-fiber diet: A diet high in processed foods and low in fiber (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) can contribute to chronic constipation.
- People who take certain Medications: opioids, antidepressants, and antipsychotics can lead to chronic constipation.
- People with medical conditions: such as irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and Parkinson’s disease.
How do we treat chronic constipation?
Treatment of chronic constipation depends on the underlying cause. In general, treatment of chronic constipation includes a combination of lifestyle changes and the use of medications to improve bowel movements.
Here are some treatment options for chronic constipation:
- Lifestyle changes: increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and getting regular exercise.
- Behavioral therapy: Some people with chronic constipation may benefit from behavioral therapy to help change bowel habits and improve bowel movements.
- Laxative supplements: These can be used to help improve bowel movements and treat constipation. Buckthorn supplements may help improve bowel movements.
How does buckthorn extract help with chronic constipation?
Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) is a medicinal plant known for its laxative properties and is traditionally used to treat constipation.
The main active ingredients in crusin are anthraquinones, such as frangulin and emodin, which have laxative effects by stimulating intestinal contractions and increasing the volume of water in the intestine. Crusin may also help relieve pain and inflammation in the digestive tract.
It is important to mention that the use of buckwheat for constipation should be done with caution and should not be used long-term, as it can lead to addiction and decreased effectiveness.
