Lemon balm, also known as Melissa officinalis or “lemon balm”, is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family, native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region.
Lotionweed is known for its fragrant leaves, which, when crushed, have a scent similar to that of lemon, and for its medicinal properties.
Lemon balm has been cultivated for at least 2000 years and has been traditionally used in many cultures. In Greek mythology, the name “Melissa” was associated with the nymphs and priestesses who served in the cult of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and harvests. According to a Greek myth, the nymph Melissa discovered and taught people how to collect honey.
Therefore, the plant is traditionally used as a melliferous plant, meaning a plant that attracts bees. In fact, the name “Melissa” derives from the Greek word for bee. And in some cultures, lemon balm was believed to attract love and happiness. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans used lemon balm for medicinal, culinary, and even religious purposes.
Hippocrates, often called the “father of medicine,” wrote about its use in the treatment of mental health problems. In the Middle Ages, lemon balm was used to relieve sleep problems and anxiety, and was considered a powerful heart tonic.
In popular culture, lemon balm has often been associated with longevity. King Charles V of Spain enjoyed a personal garden grown only with lemon balm, which he used to make a tea that he considered essential for his health. Also in the 17th century, a lemon balm preparation known as the “Elixir of Life” was popular among the nobility.
Today, lemon balm is still used in traditional medicine, particularly for its calming and sedative properties. It is also a popular ingredient in teas and other food and skin care products.
Lemon balm essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to help reduce stress and anxiety. Preliminary research suggests that inhaling lemon balm oil may have a calming effect and may improve mood. Due to its calming properties, the oil is often used to help relieve insomnia and other sleep problems.
Studies suggest that lemon balm oil has strong antimicrobial properties, meaning it can help fight certain types of bacteria and fungi, and due to its antiviral properties, melissa oil can be used to help relieve cold and flu symptoms. Lemon balm oil has antimicrobial and antiviral properties, making it useful in treating some skin conditions and fighting infections.
The essential oil may have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
You can combine lemon balm oil with other calming oils, such as lavender oil to promote a state of calm and reduce stress and anxiety, and with sweet orange oil to improve sleep quality and help combat insomnia.
