What is NADH?

NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide + Hydrogen) is an essential coenzyme that plays a central role in cellular metabolism and energy production. NADH is crucial for the proper functioning of the body, being involved in the transport of electrons within the mitochondrial respiratory chain, where it contributes to the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the main energy currency of the cell. In this process, NADH functions as an electron donor, transforming food into usable energy, essential for the optimal functioning of organs and tissues.

Did you know?

Regardless of whether it is written NAD, NAD+ or NADH, the compound referred to is the same. The difference lies in the position of the molecule in the electron transport process.

Differences between NADH vs. NAD vs. NMN

NADH is a powerful compound due to its immediate role in cellular energy production, making it effective for increasing both physical and cognitive energy. While NAD+ and NMN indirectly contribute to energy and aging processes by supporting enzymatic processes and replenishing NAD+ stores.

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)

NAD+ Precursor: NMN is a direct precursor to NAD+ and is derived from ribose, niacin (vitamin B3), nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside. It is rapidly converted to NAD+ by enzymes in the body.

Role: It is one of the most effective precursors for directly increasing NAD+ levels in cells. Enzymes use NMN to generate NADH, which is then used for energy production in mitochondria.

Benefits: Rapidly increasing NAD+ levels, improving mitochondrial function and energy metabolism, anti-aging benefits, improving cognitive function, and supporting proper sirtuin function.

NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

Oxidized Form: NAD+ is the oxidized version of NAD. In this state, it can accept electrons, making it an essential cofactor in redox reactions.

Role: NAD+ acts as an electron acceptor in metabolic processes. It helps convert nutrients into energy by facilitating the transfer of electrons.

NAD Benefits: Increased levels of NAD+ are associated with improved cellular energy production, DNA repair, and slower aging. It is essential in energy metabolism and supports the function of enzymes called sirtuins, which are linked to longevity.

NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide + Hydrogen)

Reduced Form: NADH is the reduced form of NAD+, meaning it carries an extra hydrogen atom and two electrons.

Role: NADH donates electrons to the electron transport chain, an essential step in the production of ATP, the cell’s main energy source. This makes NADH directly involved in energy production.

NADH Benefits: NADH is known for its ability to increase energy levels, reduce fatigue, and support brain function. It is often used in supplements to improve mental clarity, memory, and concentration, as well as to treat conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

How is NADH deficiency achieved and why does it occur?

Factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, overeating, chronic inflammation, and circadian rhythm disruptions significantly affect NADH levels in the body. This can lead to decreased cellular energy production, accelerated aging, and suboptimal cell function.

How can NADH be increased?

NADH levels can be restored by adopting a diet rich in tryptophan, exercising regularly, and taking specific supplements. These methods contribute to improving overall health, providing more cellular energy and supporting essential body functions.

NADH Dosage

Recommended doses of NADH supplements range from 5 mg to 30 mg per day, depending on each person’s needs. For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended to take supplements on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, to support energy production throughout the day..

NADH Benefits

One of the most important functions of NADH is the production of energy at the cellular level. NADH helps mitochondria generate ATP, which is necessary for all vital processes in the body. In conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, where affected individuals suffer from low energy levels, NADH supplementation can bring considerable benefits. By stimulating mitochondrial function and increasing ATP production, NADH can improve the feeling of fatigue and provide extra energy to those suffering from these conditions.

NADH supplementation is also useful for people who are experiencing general fatigue or physical exhaustion. Mitochondria need NADH to generate energy from food, so supplementation can ensure a constant level of energy, thus supporting daily performance.

The study entitled “Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)” investigated the efficacy of NADH supplementation in these patients. The study was a clinical, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted over a 3-month period. 86 patients were randomized to receive either oral NADH (20 mg) or placebo for the first two months. Various aspects, such as fatigue intensity, functional performance, mood, sleep quality and exercise capacity, were evaluated, both at baseline and at 30, 60 and 90 days.

The results showed that there were no significant differences in most of the variables analyzed at the end of the study. However, NADH administration was associated with a reduction in anxiety (-1.0 points) and a decrease in maximum heart rate after the stress test (-8.1 beats/min). The placebo group did not show significant changes in these variables. No differences were observed between the perception of efficacy of NADH and placebo treatment, from the perspective of both investigators and patients.

In conclusion, NADH supplementation was associated with a decrease in anxiety and maximum heart rate, but did not influence other clinical variables or global functional performance in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

  • Cognitive function and brain health

In addition to its role in energy production, NADH plays a vital role in cognitive function. Studies suggest that NADH supplementation may improve memory, concentration, and mental performance. This is due to NADH’s ability to reduce oxidative stress in the brain and stimulate energy production in nerve cells. In neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, where oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are involved, NADH can provide protection against cellular damage, contributing to the preservation of cognitive functions.

By reducing oxidative stress, NADH helps prevent damage to neuronal cells and, implicitly, improve brain function. In addition, by supporting the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, NADH can positively influence mood and cognitive functions.

  • Support for neurodegenerative diseases

One of the most promising uses of NADH is in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. NADH has been shown to reduce symptoms of the disease, such as physical disability and depression. This coenzyme contributes to maintaining neuronal health by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress at the neuronal level. In Parkinson’s disease, dopaminergic neurons suffer progressive deterioration due to mitochondrial dysfunction, and NADH supplementation can slow this deterioration, providing additional support in controlling symptoms.

  • Antioxidant protection provided by NADH

As an antioxidant, NADH plays an essential role in protecting cells against oxidative stress, a process by which free radicals damage cellular structures, contributing to aging and the development of chronic diseases. NADH contributes to neutralizing these free radicals, thus preventing cellular damage. Through this mechanism, NADH contributes to maintaining overall health and preventing conditions associated with oxidative stress, such asbe neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

  • Cardiovascular health

Another important area where NADH has shown its potential is cardiovascular health. NADH has been shown to improve heart function by reducing oxidative stress, a major factor in the development of heart disease. By supporting the mitochondria in heart cells, NADH can improve the production of energy needed for heart muscle contraction, thus helping to prevent heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.

  • Improving athletic performance

There are studies that suggest that NADH supplementation can improve athletic performance and physical endurance. By increasing cellular energy production and reducing muscle fatigue, NADH can help athletes perform better during intense workouts. By reducing lactic acid buildup in muscles, NADH can also prevent muscle fatigue and improve post-exercise recovery.

  • Mood and Depression

In addition to its energy and cognitive benefits, NADH can also positively influence mood. NADH supplementation has been shown to improve symptoms of depression, particularly by influencing the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which play a key role in mood regulation. By increasing levels of these neurotransmitters, NADH can help reduce depressive symptoms and improve overall well-being.

  • DNA Repair and Longevity

NADH also plays an important role in the process of DNA repair and in maintaining genomic stability. By supporting these processes, NADH helps prevent the accumulation of genetic mutations that can lead to premature aging and the development of chronic diseases. In this way, NADH supplementation may contribute to prolonging life and maintaining overall good health as we age.

Fountain of Youth” – Beauty and Longevity

Increasing NADH levels may contribute to a healthy and long life, reducing the risks associated with serious diseases.

NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide + hydrogen) is an essential molecule for cellular function and energy production. As we age, NADH levels decline, affecting vital processes such as DNA repair and inflammation regulation, which accelerates aging and reduces metabolism. This leads to wrinkles, fine lines, and a weakened skin barrier.

Low NADH levels are also associated with problems such as weight gain and metabolic syndrome, slowing down metabolic processes that contribute to fat burning and blood sugar regulation. In addition, a lack of NADH increases sensitivity to UV rays and the risk of skin cancer by affecting the ability to repair DNA damaged by sun exposure.

Restoring NADH levels through oral supplements or intravenous infusions can support energy production, improve mitochondrial function, and combat signs of aging. In skin care, NADH is used in serums and creams to restore vitality, reduce fine lines, and strengthen the protective barrier. When combined with antioxidants and peptides, its effects are enhanced, providing protection against oxidative stress and supporting skin regeneration.

How can we increase NAD+ levels?

For those looking to increase their NAD+ levels naturally, foods rich in amino acids, such as broccoli, avocado, and steamed fish, are excellent sources of NAD+ precursors. Intense exercise, such as HIIT, has also been linked to increased NAD+ production.

Supplementing with NADH has numerous health benefits, including boosting energy levels, supporting cognitive function, and protecting against neurodegenerative diseases.
